Water measurement conversions
Recipes switch between volume (cups, tablespoons and teaspoons) and weight (grams) all the time, and for water the two aren't interchangeable โ you have to know the density. Water has a density of about 1 g/ml, which means:
- 1 cup of water โ 240 g
- 1 dl of water โ 100 g
- 1 tablespoon of water โ 15 g
- 1 teaspoon of water โ 5 g
Measuring tip. Water is the reference point: 1 millilitre weighs exactly 1 gram, so 1 dl = 100 g and 1 litre = 1 kg.
The pages below give you each specific conversion โ pick the exact one you need, with a full table and a calculator for any amount. When a recipe really matters, a kitchen scale beats every volume measure: weight ignores how packed or sifted the water is.
